Wake Stone Receives Awards
Environmental Eagle Awards

In September, 1998, the National Stone Association presented Wake Stone Corporation of
Knightdale with Environmental Eagle Awards for each of their four quarry operations during
their midyear meeting held in Denver, Colorado. Wake Stone Corporation's Triangle Quarry,
located in Cary, received the Gold Excellence award signifying superior performance in the
criteria categories. The company's Moncure Quarry, located in northern Lee County,
Knightdale Quarry, located in Knightdale, and Nash County Quarry, located in northern Nash
County each received Silver Outstanding Achievement awards.
The National Stone Association's Environmental Eagle Awards program is co-sponsored by
the U. S. Environmental Protection Agency. The NSA received 61 entries from construction
aggregate producers nationwide for the 1998 awards competition. Of the 61 entries judged,
6 entries received the Gold Eagle Award for Excellence, 14 received the Silver Eagle Award
for Outstanding Achievement, and 15 received the Bronze Eagle Certificate for
Accomplishment. Judging of the entries is by representatives of the environmental and
operations side of the aggregates industry, the US EPA, an environmental awareness group,
and the national trade press. Entrants are judged on;
the quality and effectiveness of the operation's proactive environmental programs,
the degree of employee involvement in environmental programs,
the quality and effectiveness of an operation's pollution prevention and waste
minimization programs,
the extent to which an operation has implemented effective envirorunental control
measures, and
the extent to which the operation's environmental control measures produce
measurable results better than regulatory requirements.
