The National Stone Association's Environmental Eagle Awards program is co-sponsored by the U. S. Environmental Protection Agency. The NSA received 61 entries from construction aggregate producers nationwide for the 1998 awards competition. Of the 61 entries judged, 6 entries received the Gold Eagle Award for Excellence, 14 received the Silver Eagle Award for Outstanding Achievement, and 15 received the Bronze Eagle Certificate for Accomplishment. Judging of the entries is by representatives of the environmental and operations side of the aggregates industry, the US EPA, an environmental awareness group, and the national trade press. Entrants are judged on;

• the quality and effectiveness of the operation's proactive environmental programs,

• the degree of employee involvement in environmental programs,

• the quality and effectiveness of an operation's pollution prevention and waste minimization programs,

• the extent to which an operation has implemented effective envirorunental control measures, and

• the extent to which the operation's environmental control measures produce measurable results better than regulatory requirements.
